"Data is the raw material of the 21st century." This is how our former Chancellor Angela Merkel drew attention to the importance of data back in 2016. Every day, companies generate around 2.5*1018 bytes (2.5 trillion bytes) of data, which corresponds to the storage capacity of 36 million iPads. However, 73 percent of the data generated is not used. The energy sector in particular is very conservative due to its previous connection to the public sector and is backward compared to other sectors when it comes to data and its use. These are the results of the 2017/18 biMA study by BARC and Sopra Steria.

According to the current municipal utility study by EY and BDEW from 2022, municipal utilities are aware of the trend towards digitization in the energy sector and see it as one of the most important topics. Whether data platforms, value-based maintenance or predictive analytics - the development opportunities for digitizing the energy industry are diverse.

Business intelligence maturity models are used to find out how far a company has progressed in terms of digitalization and data usage.

Business intelligence (BI) is a process that uses the collection, integration, analysis and presentation of company data to help managers and decision makers make better decisions and improve company performance. In the energy industry, for example, BI can be used to analyze the utilization of power plants or to plan maintenance work in advance (value-based maintenance). BI tools can be used to monitor the performance of power plants, compare energy production and demand with historical data and forecasts, and improve the efficiency of individual turbines.

Likewise, an energy supplier can use BI to analyze its customers' consumption data to identify consumption patterns, forecast energy demand, and make targeted offers to customers.

BI maturity models are a framework that helps companies analyze, evaluate and improve their current BI capabilities. These capabilities can vary in level, which is why five maturity levels are distinguished:

1. Emerging
2. Early
3. Established
4th ripe
5. Advance/Visionary
The classification is currently carried out by answering an extensive questionnaire. The questions cover various areas of a company. They range from general questions about the company to detailed questions in the areas of organization, resources, data infrastructure, analysis and management.
