How to know what position your website is in Google?

Post by tongfkymm44 »

Background
First of all, you should know that your website does not have a unique position in Google since it works through the use of keywords (queries that users make in the search engine).

Therefore, your website can appear for various keywords, each in a different position, as long as it has good SEO done, that is, a website can appear in first position for the keyword "green tea", in fourth position for "buy tea online" and not appear for "macha tea":

Now, how do you know what position your website appears in for a specific keyword?
Time needed: 5 minutes

There are several ways to check it, some free and others paid. In this article we will explain several of each type but, before going into more detail, for those of you who are impatient, we are going to explain a free and very simple method to be able to check, just:

Access the RankTank tool

Complete the fields
Add the keyword in question, your website URL, the country and language you want to test for and click “Try Search”check keyword in ranktank

See the result
And voila! Among other things, a text appears telling you in what position your website appears for that word in question.keyword position rank tank in google

Please note that this tool will only allow you to perform a few checks per day.

Introduction to keyword tracking
As you can imagine, this method is only useful for a one-time query. If you decide to work seriously on the SEO of your projects, you will soon find yourself needing to constantly monitor the positions of your pages for your target keywords. Welcome to the world of keyword tracking!

Nowadays there are many tools to know/control the positions of keywords in Google or any other search engine. As I said before, there are some free ones but most of them are paid and choosing one can be a real headache.

Considerations to keep in mind when choosing a keyword tracking tool
Years ago, Google was much simpler than it is now and the process to find out jewelers email database where you appear was simpler, as there was only one way to display an organic result and everyone appeared the same. Today, Google is modular and, based on many factors, builds each results page in a unique way, trying to offer the best possible content to the user.

Today you will find, apart from the traditional organic results:

Traditional Organic SERP
Many other blocks/modules for organic results:

SERP video block
SERP block of alleged posts from other users
And each of the keyword tracking tools that we will discuss later have been adapted as they saw fit, that is, each one has a different way of managing the position of these modules, so it is worth taking all this information into account before hiring one tool or another.

On the other hand, the results pages also behave differently based on geolocation (the place from which the query is made), device (mobile, desktop or tablet) and the history of the user making the query. The same happens if you make the query in Google Images, Google News, etc. Therefore, you should also find out how the tool manages this and, in addition, I recommend that it allows you to configure different tracking projects to segment data based on all of the above.

Free keyword tracking tools
In this section I can tell you about two tools: SERPROBOT and Google Search Console .

Improve your SEO!
The first one, although I have not used it, I see that it is a simple and free tool that will be enough to know the position for a small group of words. Little more, it does not provide cross-referencing data with other metrics.

Google Search Console is not a tracking tool as such, but it is true that in the "Performance" report, you can see which keywords your website appears for, along with other metrics such as average position, impressions (times it appears on Google), clicks and CTR (ratio between appearances and clicks):

GSC performance report words
As you can see, it also allows us to see the trend by keyword and by page. And, although it is true that it is not the definitive tracking tool, for those of you who do not have resources, it can be more than enough (keeping in mind that this data is an average and sometimes it is not very accurate), since it is free and you still need it to manage the SEO of your project.

Another strong point of this tool is that it is possible to filter this data by several things:

GSC performance filters
And, with a little training, you can create automated dashboards with DataStudio , since the connector for data extraction works quite well.

Professional keyword tracking tools
As you can imagine, there are hundreds of tools that meet these objectives, but in this case you can find two types:

Exclusive keyword tracking tools
Tool suites that, among other features, include a rank tracker
From the first group, I can recommend Advanced Web Ranking . We use it in the agency and, honestly, the quality-price ratio is very good.

As for the second group, you can find super powerful tools like Ahrefs and Semrush, where the tracking module is very worthwhile, especially the one from Semrush:

semrush keyword tracking dashboard
But there are also other more affordable suites such as SEOBOX and DinoRANK that are just as good as the ones mentioned above and also include modules for keyword tracking.

And here I stop, I am not able to recommend one tool over another, as it is a matter of your needs and tastes. As I said before, I recommend that you inform yourself well about what they do and how they do it and, only then, decide.
