There are two options for creating a business model canvas: Business Model Canvas and Lean Business Model Canvas.
The Business Model Canvas first emerged when it became obvious that traditional business plans were useless. People spent countless hours writing detailed strategies, but no one read them and they were simply thrown away.
Then analyst Alexander Osterwalder suggested that plans are created not by managers, but by designers with visual thinking.
In psychology, there is a term "gestalt", which means understanding a phenomenon or image as a single whole. Canvas is a kind of gestalt of a business model, when all the main elements of a strategy are presented on one sheet of paper.
But the Business Model Canvas was designed primarily for offline companies to help them plan out the next steps of their work for a quarter or a year. When the template was adopted by startups, it turned out that it wasn’t suitable for them. There was nothing to fill in certain columns of the plan (for example, the project had no partners or the distribution channels were unclear). So Ash Maurya, another strategist, created a simplified version of the plan – the Lean Canvas.
This is a Business Model Canvas adapted for a startup in the early stages of development. It is the first case of business model documents for a future project, which will be periodically changed in the future. It is needed for business founders, potential partners and investors.

Filling out the Lean Canvas step by step
The Lean Canvas table contains 9 blocks. You can draw it yourself or use an online template.
The canvas author suggests a certain sequence for filling in the sections. To correctly format the table, you need to answer questions about the product.
Consumer Segments and Early Adopters
Who is your client?
Figure out who will use the product and who will buy it. For example, if you have developed a service for companies or an application, then the manager is usually responsible for the selection and payment, and the company's employees are responsible for using the product.
Who are the first users?
Organize a group of several members of your target audience to participate in the development and launch of the product. They will test, validate hypotheses, and provide feedback on the product.
The problem and available alternatives
Identify the customer's problem and determine who the competitors are.
What problem does the client have?
Analyze all audience segments from the first block and determine which of their needs is satisfied by the product.
Let's say you've developed a new social network for networking purposes. Its main goal is to unite specialists from various fields to participate in common projects. Such a product satisfies the needs of clients in finding professional contacts, as well as in communication.
