Whether you're looking for a new apartment, shopping online , looking for a job or communicating with friends on social networks - digital platforms are now widespread in all areas of life. And industrial companies have long been using such platforms for business customers to bring products, services and manufacturing processes together.
A large majority of German citizens do not want this market to be left to the big players from the USA or China. Three quarters (73 percent) say that German companies should become platform providers themselves. And even 9 out of 10 (90 percent) are of the opinion that politicians should do more to promote the development of German and European digital platforms. This is the result of a representative survey of 1,003 German citizens commissioned by the digital association Bitkom.
At the same time, around one in two (45 percent) cash app database would like digital platforms to be more strictly regulated than before. However, there are clear differences between the generations. Six out of ten respondents aged between 50 and 64 (60 percent) and those aged 65 and over (58 percent) are in favor of more regulation, but only a minority and just half as many in the 30 to 49 age group (33 percent) and 16 to 29 age group (29 percent) are in favor of more regulation.
"Germany must go from being a laggard to being a pioneer in the platform economy," says Bitkom President Achim Berg. "It is worth listening to the younger generation once again in the discussion about the platform economy. We must move away from a debate about prevention and prohibition towards smart regulation that enables and supports innovation." Digital platforms and the platform economy are also central topics of the federal government 's next digital summit on October 28 and 29, 2019 in Dortmund.
