According to data from a study on the implementation of ICT in retail trade prepared by ONTSI (National Observatory of Telecommunications and IS), in 2006, the percentage of companies that bought online was 19.6%, and those that sold were around 6.5%. While in 2008, 22.4% of retail companies bought online and sales were 7.7% was 1.8% in the first case and
1.2% for the second. However, it seems that the geographical expansion of the market is the main reason why SMEs decide to open their business to the Internet (86%), and in second betting data place is keeping up with competitors (66.7%). Specifically, this report details that only 7.7% of companies dedicated to
retail trade have opened their business online.

Aware of the need for the Spanish economy to open up a market on the Internet, especially in times of crisis, due to the geographic expansion that this entails for local entrepreneurs, together with the possibility of competing with more powerful businesses, AECEM has decided to undertake a series of 10 one-day courses on
electronic commerce for SMEs in 10 different cities in Spain.
