AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude or Google Gemini can now write amazingly well and are generally helpful and useful when creating content. What could be more obvious than integrating them directly into the WordPress backend? This is already possible with numerous generative AI plugins - I have taken a closer look at seven of them and will explain to you in this article what they can do and what they are suitable for:

AI Content Writing and ChatGPT
Excursus: My career and my attitude towards AI texting tools
So that you understand my background: I have been earning my living from writing for 30 years now. I have completed a classic journalistic training, have been an editor-in-chief several times, run my own internet projects and help companies with everything related to content. In short: When it comes to online content, I know my stuff.
I have found AI tools exciting for many years and have tested them again and again. Unfortunately, they were never really usable - until ChatGPT came out at the end of November 2022. It completely amazed me. Since then, AI tools skype database have been part of my toolbox. For example, they help me come up with ideas, talk through a topic or create an initial outline. I also find them useful for finding information in large documents, such as legal texts or scientific papers. These are just a few examples.
Others see it primarily as a way to create content extremely quickly and inexpensively. ChatGPT writes you a detailed post within seconds. A boring product data sheet can be turned into a description text for the online shop just as quickly.
What are AI WordPress Plugins good for?
Conventional AI tools like ChatGPT can write well, but their interface is not optimized for this task. Instead, it is designed for chats of all kinds and is therefore very general, with no special options or menus for content creation. You also have to copy and paste the text into your WordPress backend. There is a more convenient way to do this.
And it's not just about text. ChatGPT, for example, offers an image generator called Dall-E. This can be used to create all kinds of visual content. Well-known alternatives in this area are Midjourney and Ideogram. Big names like Adobe and Getty Images now also offer such functions. They are thus competing primarily with stock photo platforms. Here, too, it is more convenient if you generate the images directly where you create your content. Then you don't have to download them from the service provider and upload them to your website again.
As you will see, the AI WordPess plugins presented here also offer image generators and even other features such as chatbots for customer service.
For this article, I will limit myself to the topic of texts and images, because almost every website needs them.
I am aware that there is a lot of criticism of AI tools and what and how they are used. It would go beyond the scope of this article to address this. Instead, I assume that you have already made the decision to use AI. Now I would like to answer your question: Which plugin is particularly suitable for this and why?
The 7 Best AI WordPress Plugins
AI Engine – the most used
With over 80,000 active installations, AI Engine is the most used plugin in this comparison. You create texts and images in a separate area in the WordPress backend, away from the regular editor. This is how most of the plugins I looked at do it. In addition, there is a "playground" for all kinds of AI tasks, useful functions such as translation, and an assistant that is always available directly in the editor. A chatbot function is also included.

My conclusion
A special feature of AI Engine is the great flexibility in terms of possible AI providers. In addition to the classic ChatGPT, these include Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini. But that's not all: via platforms such as OpenRouter, Replicate and Hugging Face, you can choose between tens of thousands of other models for texts and images. You can even use locally installed AI - provided you have the appropriate technical expertise. And it's fully integrated into WordPress. That suits me very well, because although ChatGPT is often considered the standard today, only a few users use alternatives. But this can make sense, because some models are better suited to some tasks than others. I personally prefer the AI Claude when it comes to texts, for example. And a locally installed AI is interesting for companies, for example, because then no data is passed on to the outside. Another bonus with AI Engine: the user interface is at least partially in German, while all other plugins are only available in English. I also liked the layout of AI Engine in my test, as it looks both tidy and offers functions for advanced users.
However, in addition to the advantages mentioned, there are also a few pitfalls. For example, the editor does not save anything: If users navigate to another menu item and return later, the content is gone. That's not ideal.
Price
The Pro version is available from $59 per year. There is also a free version with limited functionality. You pay for the AI usage itself through the respective providers such as OpenAI.
