WhatsApp launches tool to control inclusion in groups

Post by Joyzfs444 »

Unknown numbers have been adding WhatsApp Web users to propaganda groups, in an invasive and alarming practice.

Even those who have configured the app to only allow known contacts to join groups are being affected, highlighting flaws in the app's security.

The spam messages only appear on WhatsApp Web, not the mobile app, raising questions about why this type of spam is being allowed.

How WhatsApp propaganda groups are being formed
The practice occurs through unknown numbers that automatically include users in chinese overseas asia database propaganda groups without prior authorization. As soon as the user is added to the group, he or she is immediately excluded, preventing any type of interaction or response. However, the message with the propaganda remains visible, making it difficult to block and report the senders.

This type of spam usually has titles like “Unknown name” and tends to promote a variety of services, such as debt renegotiation, health plans, lotteries, supplement stores, and telecommunications services. The ads contain links or contact phone numbers, which can pose a risk of scams or fraud.

Which companies appear in spam messages on WhatsApp
Some companies mentioned in the messages deny any involvement in the practice of spam. Porto Seguro Saúde, for example, reported that its communications with customers are carried out exclusively through official channels and that it does not use WhatsApp for unauthorized advertising.

Another case is that of Compare Health Plans, which claims that lead generation companies are using its name inappropriately. Compare stated that it is already taking legal action to hold those involved accountable, emphasizing that its actions are in compliance with the General Data Protection Law (LGPD). The company reiterates that it does not send promotional messages without authorization.

How to report unknown numbers and groups on WhatsApp
To prevent this practice from continuing and to increase security, WhatsApp provides a way to report suspicious numbers and unknown groups directly through the app. Follow the steps below to report:

On the conversation screen, click on the three dots in the top right corner (⋮).
Select “More” and click “Report”.
Confirm that you want to delete the conversation – this option is enabled by default. If you want to keep records, take screenshots before proceeding.
Click “Report” and choose the reason, such as “unwanted content”.
If the case is serious and involves threats or other illegal situations, it is recommended that the complaint be formalized with the competent authorities.
Additionally, for added protection, check your privacy settings. Go to “Settings > Account > Privacy > Groups” and make sure that only known contacts can add you to groups.

Risks to users and the importance of spam protection
Being exposed to spam messages on WhatsApp is more than just an annoyance. These messages can direct users to suspicious links or phone numbers, potentially being a channel for scams and fraud. It is essential that users remain vigilant and avoid clicking on unknown links or sharing personal information.
